Laura Fernandez

Laura Fernandez was born in Madrid, Spain, and spent her early childhood in Spain and Switzerland. At eight years old she moved with her family to Calgary, where she spent her young adult years. Currently based in Toronto, she is an award-winning visual artist, pianist, singer-songwriter and recording artist.

Her debut CD, The Other Side, led to a prestigious award at the New York International Independent Music Festival and performances at Madison Square Garden, the Knitting Factory, The Bitter End, and international festivals. The album consists entirely of original material and is an intimate expression of her journey through motherhood, love, marriage and separation.
Her second release, Un Solo Beso, is a mostly Spanish-language album, produced by the late Juno award-winning producer Billy Bryans; it celebrates her Spanish roots and Latin influences, and features some of Canada’s most vibrant and highly acclaimed musicians, with arrangements and performances by Hilario Duran, Roberto Linares Brown, and Luis Mario Ochoa. The all-original material is joined by a collaboration and translation of Red Red Bird by guitarist and songwriter Noah Zacharin, who also played on the album. The CD received extensive airplay in Canada and abroad, and charted in the top 10 across Canadian campuses.

Okay, Alright, a new collection of songs that span two decades of songwriting, was released in 2020 during the pandemic and has also garnered international airplay. The album was beautifully produced, engineered, and mastered by the late multi-Grammy award-winning producer and mastering engineer Peter J. Moore.
In 2018 Laura also spent five weeks in India performing with Indian musicians, exploring Indo, Latin and Jazz fusions, and subsequently released a CD under the Jazz Goa label.

Laura Fernandez has officially been named to the Steinway Artist roster. Steinway & Sons maintains a selective process in naming Steinway Artists, choosing only pianists who demonstrate a love of Steinway pianos and a standard of excellence in their music.
In 2015, Laura was named one of the 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians.
Since 2008, Laura Fernandez has been the producer/host of Café Latino on JazzFM91.
