Santerias

Saturday, October 5 at 9 pm
Jazz Bistro
251 Victoria Street, Toronto
When JUNO Nominated Artist Rafael Zaldivar sits down at the piano, he brings a wealth of inspiration to the keys: his compositions display his percussion expertise; his many years of collaborating with top jazz musicians from The United States of America and Canada; and his cultural heritage.
Toronto Urban Latin ensemble fires up funk fusion! New video/single release “Mundo Desigual” (Unequal World) will have audiences speaking in tongues. Like the religion of Santeria their propulsive music is a mystical blend of old and new world influences – tribal rhythms expressing themselves in the gospels of popular song. Heartfelt guitar runs along with beat inducing electric bass while the dynamic drums transport the rhythm to funky Latin locales. Sultry vocals breathe out Bossa tales that teasingly take each song to a mysterious musical place occupied exclusively by Santerias. This Toronto quartet, brings the influences of their diverse backgrounds to the forefront of their sound to expose a funk and energetic fusion. Some songs bring in Latin rhythms while some embrace a Brazilian Tropicália sensibility. With a hot line up for 2017, band members include: Ana Lía Arias Garrido on lead vocals; Juan D. Toledo on guitar/effects and backing vocals; Oriana Barbato on bass/effects and backing vocals; and Randolf Jimenez on drums and backing vocals. Santerias’ newest release and video/single “Mundo Desigual!” (Unequal World) has been well received by the media, both radio and social media and is part of a new CD in the making which will be released in the spring. This will be one of their most experimental CDs to date, where funk, salsa, flamenco and hip hop are all glued together by the music that only Santerias is capable of creating. Santerias is set to expand the success resulting from the debut albums “Bosketches”, “Demonios”, a 2010 live CD Limited Edition, 2015’s “Oye Mira” (Hey Check this Out”) and dozens of concerts at major Ontario and Quebec festivals and venues such as Harbourfront, CBC Glenn Gould Studio and widespread acclaim from media like CBC Radio/ Radio Canada, Toronto Sun,Telelatino and Univision. They have also created videos forTMN (The Movie Network) and Bravo.
